Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions:
Part 1: Preparing the Fabric & Quilted Panel
-
Place one piece of your main fabric on a flat surface, right side down.
-
Lay the polyester wadding on top of the fabric.
-
Place the second piece of main fabric on top of the wadding, right side up.
-
Pin the three layers together.
-
Sew straight lines across the fabric to quilt the three layers together. You can sew in a grid pattern or any pattern you like.
-
Create the Rounded Edge: At the bottom of your quilted panel, use a circular object (like a bowl or plate) that is 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter to trace a rounded corner. Cut out this rounded corner on both bottom sides of the quilted panel.
Part 2: Sewing the Strap
-
Take your strap fabric piece. Fold it in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sew a seam along the long edge.
-
Turn the strap right side out and press it flat.
-
Topstitch along both long edges for a professional finish.
-
Pin one end of the strap to the middle of one of the 9.8-inch (25 cm) sides of your quilted panel. Baste it in place.
Part 3: Inserting the Zipper
-
Take your long zipper. Place the quilted panel right side up on a flat surface.
-
Pin the zipper along one of the long 11.8-inch (30 cm) edges of the quilted panel, with the zipper teeth facing down. The zipper should extend past the fabric on both ends.
-
Sew the zipper to the fabric using a zipper foot.
-
Repeat this process for the other long edge of the quilted panel, aligning it with the other side of the zipper.
-
Fold the fabric so the two zipper edges are aligned, and the right side of the fabric is facing inwards.
-
Pin the zipper edges together and sew the zipper closed, connecting the two long sides of the fabric.
Part 4: Assembling the Bag
-
With the fabric still inside out, sew the two side seams together, from the end of the zipper down to the rounded corners.
-
Create the Flat Bottom: At the bottom, align the side seam with the bottom seam (the rounded corner) to create a flat, boxed corner. Sew across this seam to create a flat bottom.
-
Finish the Zipper Ends: Cut two small rectangular pieces of fabric. Fold them in half and pin them to the raw ends of the zipper to cover them. Sew in place.
Part 5: Finishing Touches
-
Turn the entire bag right side out through the open zipper.
-
Use a point turner to gently push out the seams and corners.
-
Press the bag to give it a finished look.
-
The finished bag can be used to hold a water bottle, pencils, or other items.
