DIY Coasters, Table Covers, Summer Dresses & Blouses

Hello, fellow crafters! It seems you’re a fan of elegant, lacy crochet, and you’ve found some beautiful inspiration. While you’ve uploaded a few different styles, I’ve created a brand new, original pattern inspired by the lovely green doily with the starburst center and a delicate lacy grid. This pattern, which I’ve named the Sunburst Lattice Square, is a rewarding project that transforms a central floral shape into a stunning, square-shaped motif.

This doily is perfect as a coaster, a decorative mat, or for joining with other motifs to create a larger, beautiful piece. It’s designed for an intermediate crocheter comfortable with basic stitches and counting.

Materials

  • Yarn: Fine or fingering weight cotton yarn or crochet thread (approximately 50-75 yards). A solid color works best to show off the intricate stitch work.
  • Hook: A crochet hook appropriate for your yarn weight (e.g., 1.5 mm to 2.25 mm).
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends.
  • Stitch Markers (optional, but helpful for marking the corners).

Special Stitches

  • Popcorn (Pop): Make 5 double crochet (dc) in the specified stitch. Remove your hook from the active loop. Insert your hook into the top of the first of the 5 dc. Pick up the dropped loop and pull it through the first dc. This pulls the stitches together into a “popcorn” shape.
  • Beginning Popcorn (BPop): Chain 3 (counts as the first dc), then make 4 dc in the same stitch. Remove your hook, insert it into the top of the beginning ch-3, pick up the dropped loop and pull it through.
  • V-Stitch (V-st): (Dc, ch 1, dc) in the same stitch or space.
  • Picot: Chain 3, slip stitch into the first chain.

Part 1: The Central Sunburst

We’ll begin by creating the circular, textured core that will form the center of the square.

Round 1: Make a magic ring. Chain 3 (counts as a dc), then make 15 dc in the ring. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (16 dc)

Round 2: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Sc in the same stitch. Chain 3, skip the next dc, sc in the next dc. Repeat from * to * 7 more times. Chain 3, skip the last dc, join with a sl st to the first sc. (8 sc, 8 ch-3 spaces)

Round 3: Slip stitch into the first ch-3 space. Make a BPop in the same space. Chain 3, Popcorn in the next ch-3 space. Repeat from * to * 6 more times. Chain 3, join with a sl st to the top of the beginning BPop. (8 popcorns, 8 ch-3 spaces)

Part 2: The Lattice Grid

Now, we’ll transition from the circle to a square by creating the corners and the grid pattern.

Finishing Your Doily: Blocking for Perfection

Blocking is the most important step for this kind of project. It makes the stitches uniform, opens up the lace, and ensures your doily is a perfect square.

  1. Dampen: Gently soak your doily in cool water, or use a spray bottle to get it thoroughly damp. Do not wring or twist it.
  2. Shape: Lay the doily on a foam blocking mat or a thick towel. Gently stretch it into a perfect square, making sure all the points and scallops are even.
  3. Pin: Use rust-proof pins to secure the doily at each corner and at several points along the sides to hold its shape.
  4. Dry: Leave it pinned until it is completely dry, which may take a day or two.
  5. Unpin: Carefully unpin the doily, and you’ll be amazed at the beautiful, professional result.

Enjoy your new Sunburst Lattice Square!
